about text

In 1963, the villagers in the Vipava Valley are getting ready for two events scheduled for the very same time – a religious service honouring the Feast of the Assumption with the Most Reverend Archbishop and the celebration of the border guards of the Yugoslav National Army with the comrade Secretary of the Central Committee. They have some tough decisions to make: will they be loyal sheep or obedient comrades?

Simona Semenič’s text is an outstanding comedy. This textual bravura plays, on the one hand, with the comedy genre by questioning the borders of the comical and, on the other hand, with the bourgeois notion of theatre, which is willing to accept provocation but only up to a certain point. In the “stage directions”, the author is uncompromising: “if the actors have any prejudice or problem with nudity and sexuality onstage they should not be a part of the production of this text”. The characters, stipulates the author, should certainly look nothing like models from commercials, but should rather be exposed with all their physical shortcomings. The author thus also takes aim at the beauty ideals of the modern consumerist society.

rowan, strudel, dancing and then some is a play about a time in history and the manifestations of the fundamental split in Slovenian ideology into the liberal and conservative poles. But the more the issues untangle, the more they become a portrait of the contemporary Slovenian society in which pragmatic benefits easily replace ideological beliefs.

Simona Semenič, hailing from the town of Ajdovščina, is the most propulsive and prolific Slovenian playwright. Two years ago, she won the Prešeren Foundation Award, and three of her plays have won the Grum Award. Her plays have been translated into several foreign languages. The stage in Nova Gorica baptised her play 24hrs; this time we will stage the comedy rowan, strudel, dancing and then some which she wrote in her native dialect. The production, which includes actors from the Mladinsko Theatre and the SNG Nova Gorica, will be directed by Jure Novak, a director, author and performer of many successful shows in different Slovenian theatres; this will be his Nova Gorica debut.
