I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman

The project focuses on two young artists, a dancer and an actress, who cannot fully practice their profession in the current circumstances. Just as they complete their studies and make the first steps into the professional world, the world shuts down. Shuts down and demands social distancing. Theatre and dance urgently need the presence of the spectator, they demand human closeness. For the first time after making the decision to study art, they find themselves at home. In the city where they grew up together. In the city where they dreamed about their future. In the city where – also by leaving it behind – they laid the foundations to their art. Their return home and forced idleness trigger the sense of regression, stagnation and loss of purpose in the period of life that should be largely defined by setting out on a professional path. Memories from childhood and adolescence resurface, stirring similar emotions now as they did then, and intertwine with the insight into our current reality. A reality that questions itself as well as all the memories. Parallel to that, the question of art that can only flourish in contact with a spectator is posed.

Closing cultural institutions and the inability of performing live brought a lot of video contents to the internet that aim to keep the theatre working. The purpose of the project I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman is to study the performing potentials that we carry as artists in the present place and time. What have we lost, what we have and what is yet to come?
